Despite getting the news earlier in the day that the Goa contingent had screwed up and handed the 2004 Interhash to the boyos from the valleys and that we were going to have to wait until 2006 to prove our superiority, the hard core was not too disheartened and a good attendance of about 20 Hashers reported at the Takapu Road station. The grand strategy of this run was not immediately apparent but Flies had put some careful thought into it and provided for an easy stroll along the Tawa main drag for the walkers and a series of forays up into the heights on the left for the FRBs before the pack was reunited at the piss stop.
It began with a loop through the station and into Middleton Road before doubling back to the start area for a check. The trail was found on the main road and led up Sunrise Boulevard (where do they get these names?) for the first of the exercises in hill climbing. The old up one side of the street and back down the other trick always works once on each run so we got that over early before coming out on to Redwood Avenue. The pack was reluctant to follow the trail here down to the right, correctly sensing it was going backwards but led by Nick Name there wasn't a lot of choice. Back on the main road for the first time it quickly headed for the hills again through school grounds and some back alleys and steps. There was a check up here somewhere which brought the pack together for a tour of the scenic delights of Lyndhurst. This covered a lot of ground but brought us back near enough to where we started and eventually led down to the main road for the second time at the other end of Redwood Avenue. A short distance to the next junction and a climb up to Te Reinga View in TC's wake. Down some steps to the main road for the third time and called across the road by River Rat into Cambridge Street.
Through the shopping mall and a back alley out to the welcome piss stop behind the supermarket where the walkers were waiting expectantly. They had even left some beer. The pack arrived at various intervals from various directions. Mildew arrived in style, chauffeured by Evil. He had got mixed up on one of the ascents and confidently made his way back to the start knowing the pack had to return there some time. It weren't necessarily so. From here there were three choices: a short stroll to the On On; a ride back to the start or an honest trot back along the main road. The third option was the least popular.
The On On was at the RSA repeat the RSA Bowling Club, not the one patronized by K9. Apparently we have to wait for a bit more time to go by before we are welcome back there again. They didn't know the rowdy element were all in Goa. A bottle of Dimple Haig greeted us at the RSA in memory of 600 Porkbox appearances and a good session was soon under way in comfortable warm surroundings.
Evil took his religious adviser duties seriously and started with Puha for some crime that had something to do with coffee. He missed a chance there to find out how coffee plungers work with beer. The Sirloin award followed with Flies as the target if for no other reason than being the hare. River Rat got a new boot award for offering Evil a burn in his Porsche (I found that hard to follow too) and Mildew got the Bubbles award because he wasn't driving. The POW went to Tripod because he was there.
A simple but filling repast followed, Flies had raided the local bakery for a dozen or so loaves, cut them in half and served them up with plenty of mousetrap and pickles. A cake dessert course followed and the Hash was stopped in its tracks for $2 apiece.
A well thought out varied run that catered for all capacities, a good trail and a congenial and rewarding after match function.
On On,
Biggles
