Established in 1976, Wellington Hash House Harriers is the oldest hash in Wellington, and second-oldest in New Zealand (Auckland HHH is the oldest). We completed our 1500th run in May 2004. Here is the invitation to the inaugural run, held on February 15th, 1976.
We are also proud of being one of very few men-only hashes in New Zealand, and in the world for that matter. Why men-only in the 21st century? Well, in November 1981 the GM wrote "The hash numbers are dwindling and there is talk of allowing hussies as members. It may be the answer to a few problems so think about it, one day a decision may be reached." This shows that the value of a hasher's total inability to make a decision should not be underestimated. Besides, the fact that we are sexist chauvinist pigs makes us think that we are pretty lucky.
We run every Monday at 6.30 pm from somewhere in the greater Wellington area (the exception is during public holidays when the time may or may not be changed). In the summer (i.e. during daylight saving) we usually run in the bush and have a BBQ (B.Y.O. tucker) and a keg (B.Y.O. drinking vessel) after the run, while in the winter we tend to run more on streets and have the onon in a pub.
Visitors are welcome, even female such (but don't let it become a habit!) Please contact someone here for details.
Another way to meet hashers from WHHH and other Wellington hashes is to go to Brix Bar (formerly Red Bar (formerly Brix Bar)), corner of Willis St and Dixon St in Wellington, on Fridays after work. Just pop in for a beer and see who we are.
Our website was built by Kris "Puha" Persson. Kris, an ex-pat of Sweden, was a regular runner with Wellington HHH from 2000. He was murdered with his partner and fellow Hasher, Vanessa Johnson, while mountaineering in Bolivia on 15 August 2005.
We miss Puha terribly and not just because he was the only one who could maintain this website.
Bear with us while we figure it out!
